Iso Propyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol, also known as isopropanol or 2-propanol, is a colorless, flammable liquid with the chemical formula C3H8O.  It is a secondary alcohol, where the alcohol carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms. Isopropyl alcohol is primarily produced through hydration of propene or hydrogenation of acetone. Pure (anhydrous) isopropyl alcohol is made by azeotropic distillation of the wet isopropyl alcohol using di isopropyl ether or cyclohexane as azeotroping agents.

 

Physical Property:

  • It is Colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic pungent odor.
  • Miscible with water, ethanol, ether, chloroform, and other organic solvents. Immiscible with salt solutions.
  • relatively low viscosity
  • Highly flammable
  • Pungent, alcohol-like odor.

 

Application:

  • Commonly used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.
  • Used as a cleaning and Degreasing Agent
  • Used in cosmetics and personal care products as an ingredient in lotions, aftershaves.
  • Used as a solvent in Pharmaceutical Industry, Ink and Paint Industry.
