Phenol

Phenol is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H6O. It is a colorless, crystalline solid.  The most widely used method for producing phenol is the cumene process, which involves the partial oxidation of cumene via the Hock rearrangement.

 

Physical Properties:

  • Pure phenol is a white crystalline solid at room temperature, but it can also be a colorless liquid.
  • Phenol is Soluble in water, ethanol, and other organic solvents.
  • Phenol has a distinct medicinal odor that is often described as sweet and tarry.

 

Application:

  • Used in Production of various Pharmaceutics like antibiotics, antiseptics, and analgesics.
  • Used to prepare reagents used in plastic manufacturing industries, commercially prepare phenolic resins.
  • Phenol is used as a solvent for resins, paints, and coatings.
